ABSTRACT A simplified way to assess colorectal transit time is described. Patients ingest 24 radiopaque markers and an abdominal X-ray film is taken, either daily for a prescribed duration (single ingestion with multiple films technique) or once after daily ingestion of the same number of markers for a prescribed duration (multiple ingestion with single film technique).

Slow Transit Constipation: A Review of a Colonic Functional Disorder

ABSTRACT Constipation is a common gastrointestinal complaint that can cause significant physical and psychosocial problems. It has been categorized as slow transit constipation, normal transit constipation, and obstructed defecation. Both the definition and patho- physiology of constipation are unclear, but attempts to describe each of the three types have been made. Slow transit constipation, a functional colonic disorder represents ~15 to 30% of constipated patients.
